Summertime is the best time to travel with family, explore new places and hit the beach. Hot summer days are perfect to reduce stress by travelling around new places, but heat can lead to dehydration, which can be especially dangerous for people with Type 1 Diabetes.
A permanent opinion is to think that children with T1DM should avoid certain foods and eat kinds of food poor in sugars, which could lead to a mental stress because children think they cannot have the same possibilities of others.
A certain thing, instead, is that there are no foods to be avoided and every child should pay attention to his/her nutritional habits whether s/he has diabetes.
It’s summer time! And here some TIPS for children with Type 1 Diabetes mellitus.
Clearly hydrating is important to stay cool and keep diabetes under control. Don’t forget to drink a lot of water!
Plan you meals because carbohydrates and sugars you’re eating will have an effect in your blood and if you don’t eat you’ll have to inject insulin.
Sometimes you don’t feel to have a real lunch because you’re under the sun, and you think that eating fruit can alleviate the hot sensation. Fruit is always a good kind of food, but pay attention because if you eat only that, you ingest only sugars and you need also proteins and fats to grow well!
Would you like an option?
A pocket of whole cracker and some ham, or a whole sandwich with tomatoes and mozzarella could be a fresh, quickly and healthy choice.
And only then, why not, a yummy ice-cream is allowed!
Have a nice summer vacation!
Go to beautiful places, enjoy the countryside, go to the beach, go shopping but eat your way to hydration!
