TNO (Nederlandse Organisatie voor toegepast-natuurwetenschappelijk Onderzoek TNO) is one of the major contract research organisations in Europe. [TNO functions as an intermediary between basic research organizations and industry. By translating scientific knowledge into practical applications, TNO contributes to the innovation capacity of businesses and government. Various disciplines at TNO are involved in the project with different expertise. From methodology, behavioural science, self-management, eHealth, and intervention mapping to user modelling, cognitive systems, artificial intelligence, and situated cognitive engineering. And from child psychology and development to interoperability and standardization in networked mobile systems and business models.
The main contribution of TNO to the PAL project will be in the user needs analysis, design, ontology and evaluation and consolidation of PAL prototypes supporting self-management in young patients with T1DM. This will all be in close cooperation with the end user partners and FCSR. Furthermore we will play part in feeding the user model with information about the child’s sentiment, in the authoring tool and business models. TNO is also project coordinator and manager.
Fondazione Centro San Raffaele (FCSR) is a non-profit entity whose mission is the enhancement of basic, translational and clinical research in the fields of biomedical science and health management (www.fondazionesanraffaele.it). FCSR has developed, through the course of the years, an intensive and productive cooperation with IRCCS San Raffaele Hospital (OSR), one of the leading private scientific research institutions in Italy (www.hsr.it). FCSR includes among its significant assets a specific Unit oriented to Information Technology applications in health domain. This Unit, called e-Services for Life and Health (www.eservices4life.org) is specialized in the delivery of services internally to the hospital as well as oriented to innovative domains and disciplines for the citizens and their daily lives.
FCSR will contribute to the user requirements analysis and definition of the relative specifications. Moreover will take charge of the design experimental protocols needed to test the different releases of the PAL system, directly involving the end-users ( children with diabetes, their families, and healthcare professionals). FCSR will also coordinate the dissemination activities of the Consortium, aiming at communicating the project’s aim, potentialities and results. FCSR will carry on these researches in deep cooperation with the healthcare professionals of the pediatric unit of San Raffaele Hospital (Pediatricians, Diabetologists , Nutritionists, Psychologists), the families and volunteers of “Sostegno70 – insieme con i ragazzi diabetic ONLUS” association (www.sostegno70.org).
Imperial College – Yiannis Demiris, Antoine Cully, Oya Celiktutan Dikici
Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine (Imperial) is consistently rated among the world’s best universities, and maintains an international reputation for excellence in research and teaching (www.imperial.ac.uk/aboutimperial).The Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (www.ee.ic.ac.uk) at Imperial College is one of the top departments in the country (ranked 1st in the 2012 Sunday Times Good University Guide), while the department’s Personal Robotics Laboratory (www.imperial.ac.uk/personalrobotics), led by Dr Yiannis Demiris, is a team of 20 postdoctoral, PhD and MSc researchers, with significant expertise in Human-Robot Interaction, developmental robotics, machine learning, user modelling and simulationist approaches to action perception and generation in humanoid robots.
In PAL, Imperial’s Personal Robotics Laboratory is responsible for personalising the action selection process of the PAL system to fit the child’s individual needs and preferences. Imperial will contribute to the design and implementation of the action selection architecture for long-term robot-child interaction, the machine learning components, and the design and implementation of predictive user models. They will also contribute to the PAL system integration and evaluation activities.
Mixel – Mario Fumagalli, Diego Fumagalli, Lorenzo Citron, Paolo Quarticelli
Mixel S.c.a.r.l. was founded in 2007 by a group of Italian companies leaders in the world of new technologies and digital entertainment. Mixel has been established with the goal of creating the “Made in Italy” style in mobile entertainment. Mixel’s main lines of activity are research and development in the fields of health and e-entertainment area, development of IT infrastructure in training and edutainment areas, scientific and technical advisory to Private/Public Sector in the areas of ICT and VAS (Value-Added multimedia Services). Mixel has five main line of business: Mobile Marketing (brand imaging, brand awareness, communication), Digital Entertainment (mobile games, edutainment), Mobile Health & Fitness (mobile apps and hw accessories for health and wellness), mDemocracy (mobile apps for Public Administration Services), Mobile Safety (mobile apps for safety at work and at home). On June 4th 2010, Mixel with the application “BucaStop”, has been awarded of the first prize at the Nokia Apps to be Wired international contest. With more than 283 international developers the Nokia Apps to be Wired contest was one of the most important mobile contest in Europe. On January 12th 2012, Mixel has been accounted “Nokia Italy Developer of the Year 2011” with more than 1.000.000 downloads from the Nokia Store. Inside the PAL project Mixel is responsible of the architecture design Work Package, as well is involved in the server, cloud and database development, virtual avatar sw manager on web and mobile platform, games, diary and quiz on web and mobile platform development, as well as in the overall functional and technical project specifications.
Deutsches Forschungszentrum Für Künstliche Intelligenz – Bernd Kiefer, Ivana Kruijff-Korbayova, Uli Krieger
DFKI (Deutsches Forschungszentrum für künstliche Intelligenz) is one of the largest non-profit contract research institutes in innovative technology based on Artificial Intelligence (AI). R&D is carried out in research labs in several locations in Germany, including Language Technology (LT; Uszkoreit, van Genabith), Intelligent User Interfaces (IUI; Wahlster), and Robotics (RL; Kirchner). DFKI has close ties with the Universities in Kaiserslautern, Saarbrücken, Osnabrück and Bremen.
The LT Lab aims to facilitate the use of human languages by machines and to improve solutions that benefit from language use by conducting advanced research in LT and providing novel computational techniques for processing text, speech and knowledge. Its widely recognized strong points lie in the areas of Text Analysis, Machine Translation, and Human-Robot Communication.
In the PAL project, DFKI will provide adaptive and personalized verbal and non-verbal communication functionality to PAL’s interactive companions. The main focus is on how verbal communication in human-robot collaboration can keep and improve the social relationship over a longer period. Furthermore, the group will contribute to the knowledge representation and information processing tasks, by, among others, providing modules to analyse textual data from different sources.
Delft University of Technology – Joost Broekens, Rifca Peters
Delft University of Technology, founded in 1842, is the oldest, largest and most comprehensive university of technology in The Netherlands. It offers a wide variety of education in Science, Engineering and Design. The Interactive Intelligence group is part of the Department of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, and Computing Science of the Delft University of Technology. The group combines research from multiple disciplines: artificial intelligence reasoning techniques in the domains robots, human-agent/robot teamwork, serious gaming, agent-based simulation and negotiation; computational intelligence to study machines that can learn through interaction; and user-centered design to study how interaction should be shaped. The group participates in a number of EU and National projects on human-agent-robot teamwork and smart interfaces.
The TU delft will focus on Cognitive-Affective Modeling and Value Sensitive Design, in particular the research needed to develop the high-level cognitive and affective abilities that drive the Personal Assistant. For example, how should the PA strategically select interactions with the child to maintain high levels of engagement, how should the PA explain its choices and advice to the child, its parents, and caregivers, and what is appropriate and helpful behavior for the PA when a child is in consultation with a doctor versus playing with friends.
Produxi – Bert Bierman
Produxi is a company started in 2010 and is involved in three kind of activities: a) research on the development of social robots and the use of the NAO in particular; b) development of applications to be used in experiments designed to study usability of user interfaces c) applying the NAO on exhibitions to attract people to the stand.
In the PAL project Produxi is mainly involved in developing the interface with the NAO robot and the behaviors the NAO is doing during the interaction with the children and in creating the experimental environments in the camps and the hospitals.
Ziekenhuis Gelderse Vallei – Gert Jan van der Burg
Gelderse Vallei Hospital (Ziekenhuis Gelderse Vallei, ZGV) is a medium size general hospital in thecentre of The Netherlands, specialized in nutrition, sports medicine and human movement. The hospital has a unique alliance with Wageningen University and Research (WUR), which is internationally renowned in the field of nutrition. The development of innovative eHealth applications has been a major focus of the Cure Division of the hospital during the previous four years.The department of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine plays a leading role in developing and testingnew eHealth and mHealth solutions. Pediatric diabetes and childhood obesity are the main fields of researchfor improvement of patient self-management and lifestyle interventions with these kind of solutions.
ZGV will contribute to the analysis of user requirements, use cases and the definition of specifications.The recently developed webbased self-management tool Gluconline(r) is made available for this.Furthermore, ZGV will participate in evaluating the PAL system in end-users (patients, parents andcaregivers). Finally, ZGV will contribute to dissemination and valorisation tasks.
Meander Medical Center (MMC) is one of the larger regional hospital groups in the Netherlands, with more than 580 beds spread across three main sites, plus a number of daycare facilities in regional community centers. Formed from the merger of several smaller hospitals, MMC undertook the building of a new hospital in Amersfoort, Utrecht, to consolidate two older sites in the town into a more efficient single location.
The pediatric diabetes clinic takes care of 210 type 1 diabetes children from 0-19 years old. The diabetes team is formed by two pediatric diabetologist, 4 pediatric nurses specialized in diabetes, two dieticians, 1 psychologist and 1 social worker. The team participates in various international and national research from quality of life to GAD vaccination with the intention to cure diabetes.
Diabetes Vereniging Nederland – Inge Olivier
Diabetesvereniging Nederland (DVN) is the Dutch Diabetes Association. DVN has 52.000 members and is the biggest patient organization in our country. We represent the interests of all people with diabetes in their struggle for good care and a comfortable life in The Netherlands. Under the motto ‘live life with diabetes completely’ DVN is involved, combative and active. We speak with politicians, health insurers and health care providers to promote the interests of all people with diabetes.
As part of DVN, we have founded the SugarKidsClub (SKC) for children. Within the SKC we organize various activities for children with diabetes up to 16 years and their families. A birthday card, Christmas card, magazines, day activities, craft workshops, beach parties, newsletters and an active Facebook page to give children with diabetes the feeling they don’t stand alone. In the PAL project we are helping to achieve the goals by organizing a camp in which the robot Charlie is a central figure. In 2015 we organize a camp where 20 children from 8-11 years with diabetes may be ‘used’ by TNO may for research and experimentation with Charlie. The camp will last for 4 days and 3 nights.
In 2017 and 2018 we will organize a similar camp for PAL. The developments that Charlie makes and the results of the studies from the camp in 2015 can be evaluated in this way and taken processed. Further on we will help to find children with diabetes who are needed in the project for interviews, focus group surveys or experiments outside the camp situation.
SOStegno70 insiemi ai ragazzi diabetici – Giorgio Oldrati, Patrizia Pappini Oldrati
The SOStegno70 Onlus association was founded in 2001 by a group of parents of children and young people with diabetes, with the support of the Center for Child and Adolescent Endocrinology of the Scientific Institute Ospedale San Raffaele in Milan. The association aim at providing aid to children, young people and their families at the onset of the disease, in order to educate and help them to cope with everyday problems through a concrete program of training activities and educational camps. SOStegno70 is actively involved in the promotion and support of the scientific research on juvenile diabetes, fostering the relationships with national and international medical associations and with any other organization having similar scopes. Moreover a great effort is spent in order to create public awareness to ensure assistance to young people with diabetes and to improve their quality of life and treatment.
The SOStegno7o association will support the user requirements analysis, the co-creation activities and the subsequent definition of the PAL system specification. Moreover it will be actively involved in the evaluation of the PAL system during the summer educational camps for diabetes children and will also contribute to the dissemination and valorization of the PAL results.
